Important assumptions: • Paper production impact dominates the magazine/newspaper production, and that impact is built on data from LCIA-database ecoInvent 3.6.• Tablets are used for 8 hours per day, low intensity usage (screen is on, processors idle). • Tablets are refurbished and resold after three years. The following owner(s) carry half the production impact (*) • Impact from tablet production includes distribution, but excludes impact from usage since that is added separately. • Impact from tablet production based on official numbers for iPad Air from 2022, increased by 20% to decrease the risk of using a too low value. • Impact from producing content for the magazines are not included in any of the scenarios. • Computer is used for five years and not resold, low intensity usage for 8 hours per day (screen is on, processors idle). • Computer impact included in the Magazine scenario only if it can be argued that use of Digmi’s tablets removes the need for one or more computer(s) at the salon.
*: Selling a product to reuse, or buying a used product, saves 50% of production and waste handing impact, since you are responsible for one of the two decisions needed to complete a reuse. (So when both buying and selling a product from, and to, reuse then the impact from production and waste handing is zero, for that user). According to the IVL-report ”Product databases: the environmental benefits of reuse”, see more info in the report describing the calculation and data of this tool.
